We Said the Day-1 Number Would Move. It Went From ₹16 Crore to ₹31.

On 5 September we published four different opening-day figures for Mirzapur: The Movie — ₹16.14 crore, ₹24.75 crore, ₹25.15 crore and ₹29.7 crore — and argued that the spread was not dishonesty but four different things being counted, with the early figures being estimates that would be revised.

Three days later, the settled opening-day number is ₹30.9 crore.

Higher than all four. That is worth sitting with for a second, because it is the clearest demonstration of the point we were making: the first number you see on release night is the least reliable one, and it is almost always low.

The revision trail

Laid out in order, for one film, on one day:

• ₹16.14 crore — early India-net estimate, published while shows were still running
• ₹24.75 crore — net, revised
• ₹25.15 crore — net, reported with 11,135 shows and 42.7% occupancy
• ₹29.7 crore — one-day figure, same show count
• ₹30.9 crore — the settled day-one number

That is a 91% gap between the first published figure and the final one. Anybody who wrote a “disappointing opening” take on Friday evening was working from a number that turned out to be roughly half the real one.

What the opening weekend actually did

• Day 1 — ₹30.9 crore
• Day 2 — ₹38.4 crore
• Day 3 — ₹43.1 crore
• Three-day total — ₹112.4 crore across 33,735 shows

The shape matters more than the total. Day 2 was up 24% on Day 1, and Day 3 was up another 12% on Day 2. A film that rises across its opening weekend is being carried by word of mouth. A film that is front-loaded — big Friday, falling Saturday — is being carried by marketing, and it usually collapses on Monday.

This is the first shape. It is the better one.

And the weekend total already has three versions

We would be making our own point badly if we pretended the disagreement stopped once the weekend closed. Circulating right now:

• ₹112.4 crore — three-day, India
• ₹111.76 crore — reported as the settled figure
• ₹105.08 crore India / ₹129.54 crore worldwide

Run the four questions from our box office numbers explainer and they mostly resolve. ₹105.08 crore and ₹129.54 crore are plainly an India-versus-worldwide pair from the same source. ₹112.4 and ₹111.76 are close enough to be an estimate and a settled count of the same three days.

What you cannot do is put ₹129.54 crore next to another film’s ₹112.4 crore and conclude anything. That is the mistake, and it is made constantly.

The context that makes this a real number

Set against 2026’s Hindi releases, ₹112 crore in three days is a genuinely strong opening — not a Dhurandhar: The Revenge event, but comfortably in the year’s upper tier. The full table is in our piece on Dhurandhar as 2026’s highest-grossing non-franchise film.

The specific thing this film had to prove was different, though. It is a theatrical extension of a streaming property, and the open question was whether an audience built over years on a subscription service would pay for a ticket. Day one answered yes. Days two and three answered that they told other people.

What to watch next

Monday’s number. The first weekday is where a front-loaded film shows itself. After a rising weekend, a shallow Monday drop would confirm the word-of-mouth read.

11 September. Three Hindi films release that Friday, including Haiwaan — Priyadarshan directing Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan. Mirzapur loses screens that day, and its second weekend runs straight into that clash. The month’s full slate is in our September 2026 release calendar.
