Junaid Khan Admits 'Being Aamir Khan's Son Helps' — Nepotism Debate Reignites

Junaid Khan has done what few Bollywood star kids ever do — he told the truth. In a refreshingly candid interview, Aamir Khan’s son openly acknowledged that his family name gave him a significant leg up in the film industry, and the internet has not stopped talking about it since.

The Interview That Broke the Internet

During a promotional sit-down for his upcoming film, Junaid was asked the question every star kid dreads: “Do you think nepotism played a role in your career?” Instead of deflecting with the usual rehearsed answer, Junaid paused and said, “Of course it helps. I would be lying if I said it does not. Being Aamir Khan’s son means people take your calls, producers give you time, and casting directors know your face before you walk in. That is a privilege, and I am aware of it.”

He added, “But privilege gets you the meeting. It does not get you the audience’s love. That, you have to earn on your own.” The clip went viral within hours, amassing over 40 million views across platforms.

A History of Dodging the Question

Junaid’s honesty stands in stark contrast to how previous star kids have handled the nepotism conversation. When Kangana Ranaut first raised the issue on Koffee With Karan in 2017, calling Karan Johar the “flag-bearer of nepotism,” it set off a firestorm that has never fully died down. Since then, star kids from Sara Ali Khan to Janhvi Kapoor to Ananya Panday have offered various defenses — from “everyone has their own journey” to “I cannot change who my parents are.”

None of them, however, have been as direct as Junaid.

The Internet Reacts

Social media was predictably divided. Supporters praised Junaid for his maturity and self-awareness. “Finally a star kid who does not gaslight the audience,” wrote one user in a post that garnered over 200,000 likes. Others, however, were less forgiving. “Admitting privilege while still benefiting from it is not the flex you think it is,” countered a popular film commentator.

Industry Insiders Weigh In

Veteran casting director Mukesh Chhabra offered a nuanced take: “Junaid is right that doors open easier for star kids. But this industry is brutal — it does not care about your surname after the first Friday. If you cannot deliver, you are done.”

Director Anurag Kashyap, a longtime critic of the nepotism culture, tweeted: “Respect. Honesty costs nothing but few can afford it in this industry.”

Where Does Junaid Go From Here?

Career-wise, Junaid has actually been building credibility on his own terms. His debut in Maharaj (2024) was well-received, and his subsequent projects have shown genuine range. Unlike many star kids who coast on their family name, Junaid has actively sought challenging roles and independent filmmakers.

The Nepotism Debate Will Never End

The truth is, Bollywood’s nepotism problem is structural, not individual. As long as film financing, distribution, and casting remain concentrated within a handful of powerful families, the debate will persist. But Junaid Khan’s honesty has at least shifted the conversation — from denial to acknowledgment. And sometimes, that is where change begins.
